Sicilia Mia

Sicilia Mia

Sicilia Mia

Was driving in  my old stomping ground the other day, and was curious to see what was currently occupying the old spot taken up by Nick and Willys Pizza years ago.  I noticed a new restaurant was there called Sicilia Mia.  Forget all the stereotypes you may have of restaurants in strip malls.  This place is legit and it was fantastic.

The dining room itself was not huge.  When we walked it, the place was packed, which I suppose for a place that has only been open a few months is a really good sign.  Luckily, we had a table open up right away and we only had to wait about 10 minutes on a Thursday night at 8 PM and a party of 5.

Sicilia Mia is a trattoria, pizzeria, and bakery.  While waiting to be seated I perused the menu.  A lot of the names of the pizzas reminded me of my trip to Venice.  You don’t see many “Americanized” ingredients.  My kids love pizza and kept asking where the pepperoni was.  They ended up getting the Diavola which has Italian Salami, tomato, and mozzarella.

Another thing from the menu I noticed was the spaghetti carbonara was a house special and prepared table side.  I’m a carbonara lover and immediately decided to order it.  I was able to grab a video of the preparation below, but first the appetizers…

Arrancinette

Arrancinette

I’ve had arrancinette on a few other occasions, but these riceballs filled with cheese and meat are among the best I’ve had.  They were lightly fried, and had a delicious gooey and savory center.  Definitely get these when you come to Sicilia Mia.

For our entrees we went with two pizzas for the kids, a chicken dish for my wife, and I went with the spaghetti carbonara.  It was prepared table-side for us.  Our server rolled over a cart with a huge cheese wheel on it.  First he squirted some alcohol inside the wheel to set it on fire.  Next kitchen came out and dumped the spaghetti inside the wheel while our server scraped some fresh parmesan into the spaghetti.  It was a beautiful thing to watch.

Finally, I may have stolen a piece or two from my kids’ meal.

The staff at Sicilia Mia was awesome.  We interacted with several of them throughout the evening and had a great time.  They did a good job overcoming a somewhat undersized dining room, but providing excellent service, and our food came out faster than I expected.  Check them out on Facebook here.
