From Scratch

I feel pretty excited about some of the restaurants I’ve been able to check off my ever growing “need to visit” list.  From Scratch just South of the Gallivan Center was one of them.

Getting there and parking was a breeze for a downtown restaurant, there is a parking garage just around the corner East of the restaurant, so you don’t have to drive up and down Main St. to find a spot.

I had fairly high expectations coming into my first lunch visit.  I had heard that their pizzas were excellent for example.

Wood Fire Bread

For starters we went with a loaf of their wood fired sourdough bread.  It was comfort bread, and immediately reminded me of something I would eat at my grandma’s house.  The apple butter spread was pretty tasty.

This whiteout pizza I would highly recommend.  It won best pizza in City Weekly last year (2014).  You have a mix of ricotta, mozzarella, alfredo, garlic, and parmesan.  The garlic came in the form of roasted cloves, and the cheese was ample and tasty.  I liked how all the flavors were represented, but there wasn’t a dominate flavor that took over the pizza.  The crust was money.  I noticed sitting down, they had a pretty sizable pizza oven near the kitchen.  This pizza was a winner.

I loved the braised brisket sandwich as well.  It horseradish and pickled onions which I loved on two sourdough bread slices.  The fries were borderline amazing.  My own “beef” with this sandwich was having to pay $2 more for the fries instead of chips.  This type of “upsell” really annoys me in restaurants.  Chips are a slap in the face at restaurants of this caliber, why not just offer the fries?  /rant

I found From Scratch to be somewhere in between “I left very satisfied with my meal, but probably won’t be back unless I’m in the area” to “I loved it and will be back very soon.”  The food was certainly great and well prepared, especially the pizza, just not earth shattering/mind altering good.
