Even Stevens Sandwich Shop in Sugarhouse, Utah

Even Stevens first caught my attention when reviewing an online article of Salt Lake City’s best reuben sandwiches.  3 of the top 5 I expected to see in 9th South Delicatessen, Siegfrieds, and Feldman’s Deli, but then I saw Even Stevens on the list, and I’ve never even heard of them!  When I checked out their website, I noticed that they even did breakfast burritos which next to BBQ might be my all-time favorite food to eat.  All of this along with Even Stevens mission statement, which is to provide a sandwich to the hungry for every sandwich sold, hastened my first visit to their new Sugarhouse location close to the corner of 900 East and 2100 South.

The Even Steven dining room has a very industrial inner city feel to it.  The building in Sugarhouse looks like it was a former auto-mechanic shop with its two big garage doors in the front.  The menu consists of sandwiches, bites, salads, and breakfast items.  They have an online menu found here.

The Graduate breakfast burrito

The Graduate breakfast burrito

I’m here to announce that the graduate burrito has just become the official breakfast burrito of …. my stomach.  It was tremendous!  The take the usual flour tortilla and add eggs along with your choice of bacon or sausage, but then they continue to iterate and add breakfast taters along with white cheddar, house sauce, and siracha along with veggies like onions, tomatoes, and spinach.  I loved this burrito so much, it really set the bar pretty high for my return trip to sample the reuben sandwich.

Reuben Sandwich

Reuben Sandwich

I went with the reuben sandwich along with their side salad.  The sandwich was satisfactory but it wasn’t as good as the breakfast burrito.  Each individual element of the reuben tasted fine from the bread to the dressing, sauerkraut, and corned beef.  The one thing that separated this sandwich in my opinion from the other sandwich shop greats at the places I mentioned above, was the proportion of meat to the rest of the sandwich.  I understand trying to keep costs down, but if you look at the picture I took, the sauerkraut was about 3 times as much as the actual corned beef.

Mac And Cheese

Mac And Cheese

The mac and cheese when it was brought out was still cold in the middle.  I immediately got the attention of the manager, and they immediately fixed the problem by running it through the oven some more.  Once I had a chance to eat it, I found it to be very favorable.  I detected two different types of cheese as well as thick slices of bacon mixed throughout.  Yummy!  The other item on the bites menu that caught my eye that I didn’t get a chance to try was the house made chips and queso dipping sauce.  There is always a next time.

Even Stevens with two locations and a nice cause is primed to take out a chunk of Salt Lake City’s sandwich market.  Service was great, food was good two.  I look forward to many more of their delicious breakfast burritos.
