The Baking Hive

Walking into a new bakery for the first time is one of my favorite moments in life.  When I hear about one being opened, it doesn’t matter where I am, I stop what I’m doing and pay attention.  Just like the dog Doug in the movie “Up” when he detects a squirrel, so do I react with the thought of brownies, cake, or cookies.  That’s be honest, delicious pastries won’t eat themselves, someone has to do it.  That someone might as well be me.  Thus last week when I heard some chatter around the office that there was a new bakery in town that made this amazing cookie/brownie/chocolate frosting thing, I had to stop, collaborate, and listen, and shortly thereafter make my way over to The Baking Hive myself.

It didn’t take me long to find the three layer tower filled with what The Baking Hive called “The Dirty Johnny”.  What I like about this picture is you get a real sense from the cross-cut picture of these brownies, just how thick and interesting they are.  Start with a cookie base, and then add some delicious brownie on top of that.  If you were to stop just at those two layers alone, I would be sold, but then you add another layer of chocolate frosting on top for good measure, now my friends, you have something special.  I didn’t need to look at the other items in the store to know that I was going to be purchasing a Dirty Johnny and taking him home with me.  For some reason this song kept playing in my mind as I watched my Dirty Johnny be wrapped up in a brown paper box.

I should have been a good boy and stopped with my brownie, but the sticky toffee cake caught my eye, and I wasn’t about to leave without grabbing a slice.  The owner of the bakery Elisa Barber was a fantastic host and threw some extra caramel sauce on top of my slice for the road.  I warmed it up in the microwave for 15 seconds when I got back to the office, and by that time the caramel sauce was all melty and infused with the cake.  Let me tell you, the result was glorious.

Besides all of the delicious baked products, owner Elisa Barber is always friendly and engaging with her guests.  I got the lowdown on everything from each of the cakes and cookies, to how she is known as the “cookie lady” to Marshawn Lynch.  Her love of baking started when she was young, which is what she tries to pass along in this children’s baking area where kids can decorate their cakes and cookies with yummy toppings.

The baking hive may have just gotten started, but with a fun and engaging owner, a baking shop conducive for moms to bring their kids, as well as foodies like me to come and indulge on Dirty Johnny’s, this baking shop has a bright future.
