H&D BBQ

H&D BBQ

It is with mixed feelings that I write this review.  H&D BBQ just opened up on Fort Union in the space previously occupied by Cucina Vanina.  While I’m sad that one of my favorite Italian places just closed up, I was excited to have a new BBQ option open up in Holladay close to my work.

The menu board

The menu board

Pretty straight forward menu board that you would expect to find in a BBQ joint.  You can choose between meat plates, burgers, wings, sides, and an assortment of meats from brisket, ribs, chicken, pork, ham, and sausage.  I went with the 3 meat place so I could sample as many of their BBQ offerings as possible, along with 2 sides which came with the plate.  I of course went with the Mac & Cheese, and then upgrades my second side to fried pickles.

Brisket, Pulled Pork, and Chicken

Brisket, Pulled Pork, and Chicken

H&D didn’t have ribs ready, so I was not able to order any, but I did pick up some pulled pork, brisket, and chicken.  Believe it or not, my favorite meat of the 3 was probably the chicken.  Seems like a bad sign to say that a BBQ joint’s best offering is chicken, but this chicken had an unbelievable dry rub, and so super tender and moist.  I started to peel back the skin, but one of the workers there (the service was fantastic) told me I had to at least try some of the skin with the chicken.  Good choice, it was fantastic.

The pulled pork was also very good.  Not dry at all.  H&D provided their sweet and also spicy BBQ sauces to go along with the meat.  I’m not a fan of too many BBQ sauce choices like Famous Daves, but I would have liked to have seen a mustard sauce to try with my pork.  With that said, the sauce they provided was excellent.

I had them chop my brisket up, it was good brisket, but not exceptional.  Overall the 3 meat plate of what I sampled was very, very good.

Fried Pickles

Fried Pickles

I was happy to see fried pickles as a menu choice.  They were yummy!  The gentleman helping us brought out some of their BBQ ranch sauce and it was excellent.  Will definitely order these again.  While the fried pickles were great, the roll that came along with the meal, I found to be a little on the dry side.

Mac & Cheese

Mac & Cheese

H&D advised us that they make all of the Mac & Cheese to order, so I was really excited while eating my meats for its arrival.  I could have not been more disappointed in the Mac & Cheese.  It was very sub par.  While creamy, it tasted like frozen food Stouffers Mac & Cheese.  I only took a few bites, and didn’t finish it.

BBQ Rib

BBQ Rib

Finally, while we were finishing up with the meal, H&D had some fresh ribs just finish up so they brought my colleague and I each 1 rib to try.  This was one of the best ribs I’ve ever had, and definitely the highlight of the meal.  I’ll come back to H&D for the ribs alone.  Granted it was fresh off the smoker, so I would expect it to taste even better, but the rib was very meaty, fall of the bone tender, with an outstanding dry rub and BBQ glaze to it.  Taste was spot on.  This rib was righteous!

Overall, H&D is off to a great start here.  Meats were great, especially the ribs.  Brisket was okay.  Fried pickles were fantastic, but I hated the bread roll, and the Mac & Cheese was horrible.  I’ll definitely be back for the ribs, and the service was top notch.  Just a few little things I think they can improve on, and this would put them up amongst the SLC BBQ greats.
