Avenues Proper

Avenues Proper

Just east of LDS Hospital in the Avenues is a building that houses both Hatch Family Chocolates as well as gastropub Avenues Proper.  I gave these guys a try before attending a Morrissey concert this Spring at the U of U.  It was a cool building and cool setting with both indoor and outdoor seating.  Avenues Proper has a lunch and dinner menu, as well as Sunday Brunch.  You can find their selections here.

Truffle Fries

Truffle Fries

We started things off with some simple Pommes Frites.  I found them to be tasty but not fantastic, in  hindsight I wish I would have tried the rarebit frites that came with the house beer and cheese sauce along with bacon, tomato, and red onion.  I already have a reason to go back and try them.

Chicken and Waffles

Chicken and Waffles

My experience with chicken and waffles has been extremely hit and miss.  You basically have a dish that tries to mix savory and sweet and the thing that ties them together in most cases is the syrup.  I enjoyed the thyme infused maple syrup and the fried egg that accompanied this dish, along with the house chicken sausage.  The dish had some different approaches to the plate, but did so in a delightful manner.  I would get this dish again.

Beer Braised Short Rib

The other thing on the menu that caught my eye, so I ended up ordering it was the beer braised short rib, first for the short rib and secondly because I’m an absolute sucker for spaetzle.  I gave the meat itself a C while I give the rest of the flavors of the dish an A.  The short rib didn’t do it for me, but I found the spaetzle to be amazing.  I liked the other flavors that came along with the dish like the beets, collard greens, and fresh cheese.

The Avenues is one of Salt Lake’s oldest neighborhoods and certainly has a charm to it.  Avenues Proper captures that charm and delivers.  I’m not a beer drinker but did notice a dozen or so selections always on tap.  A good choice for a light tapas meal and/or drinks, or to satisfy your hunger before you grab a cup of Salt Lake’s best hot chocolate next door.
