I had a co-worker tell me about this bistro about a mile from my office up in Holladay, but also made me swear not to go visit without him. Upon looking up La Sage Bistro on Urbanspoon, I found something that was borderline ridiculous. There have been 247 votes for La Sage Bistro and a whopping 97% have approved. That’s officially the highest approval rating I’ve ever seen. I don’t know if I was more curious about how good the food was going to be, as I was how in the world they can manage to please nearly all of their customers.
La Sage Bistro upon walking in didn’t have anything about it that impressed me. There were about 20 patrons in the place, and every single one of them had me by about 40 years. I was wondering if a bingo game was going to break out during my lunch. Bistro isn’t about glamour, it’s about providing fresh food, and lots of it. Take a look at the above menu for example. They have a food challenge called the “Gut Gremlin” I inquired about it, but was told that it isn’t a sandwich that you can order willy-nilly on your visit. They need a phone call in advance, and judging by the size of the sandwich I saw on their successful challengers board, the sandwich probably takes several months and zoos the finish constructing. It may also be the only sandwich visible from space. Also, what the heck with the PB&J sandwich? The menu says that they didn’t think I was ready for their jelly. I was tempted to order it based on principle alone, it was as if La Sage Bistro issued me a triple-dog dare. Luckily I came to my senses, and realized that we are talking about peanut butter and jelly, and I was super hungry.
After looking through the menu which consisted of some pasta, sandwiches, and salads I settled in on the club sandwich. This sandwich is enormous! We are talking tons of meats and tons of cheeses. When the waiter left the plate in front of me, I was seriously concerned if I was going to be able to wrap my mouth around it. You could basically repel of the side of the sandwich it was so tall. The sandwich besides being very tall, was very tasty. Bacon was present and was done very crispy and very juicy. I actually was only able to finish with half the sandwich it made me so full.
My friend went with a newer chicken sandwich on the menu, but it was equally legendary. The chicken breast was huge! and take a look at the portion of bacon that thing came with? The bun was not nearly big enough to handle the massive amounts of chicken and bacon spilling out onto the plate. My buddy used a steak knife to cut off generous portions for me and our other colleague, and still only made a dent in the sandwich.
I was starting to understand why the approval rating was at 97%
Even though all three of us were well on our way to a food coma, somehow we thought it would be a good idea to supplement our meal with this “little” dessert above. It was awesome. That big ball of creme was the good kind, not the fake kind too.
Sage Bistro is a no frills, just plain good food type of deli, and I think that is what appeals to people. They make sure you leave nice and full. Everything was hand crafted with love and care, I felt very well taken care of.
I’m seriously wondering about that PB&J now.
