Pie Five Pizza Co

Pie Five

Pie Five

New to Utah this past month is Pie Five, which has a strong presence in Texas and just opened their first store outside that area near the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon in Holladay.  I’ll be completely honest in this review, this is NOT the best pizza you can get in Utah.  I can think immediately of 5-6 better tasting pizza places.  I think these guys will do well for the market they are aiming for though.  You can guess from the title that they provide pizza in 5 minutes or less, and it is custom-built to your specifications.  That include crust type, sauce, toppings, everything.  And at a price tag of just under $7 bucks a pizza, it is a pretty good value.

The prep line

The prep line

I heard a fellow co-worker describe this place perfectly.  They are the Subway of pizza.  I’m personally not really a big fan of Subway, but it’s not like you have to shove it down.  If you are hungry and in a hurry this place does quite well.  I like the setup they have with the pizza oven.  They will pre-bake the dough by passing it through the oven first to “shapen” it.  Then as guests come through, they will finish the baked dough with sauce, toppings, and cheese and pass it through a second time to finish the product.

Little pizza crust salads

Little pizza crust salads

I thought the idea behind the salads was particularly clever as well.  They take a pan pizza dough and make it into a salad.  Think of it as a Cafe Rio Salad, but with a pizza crust instead of a tortilla.  I didn’t try one, but they looked pretty good.

The Five Star

The Five Star

I went with the Five Star pizza and put it in a thick pan crust.  The toppings were pretty good and the sauce was too.  The crust was a little too thick and dry for my taste.  I went back a few days later and tried a thin crust pizza and liked it more.  You can see from the picture above my pizza has some sort of parmesan cheese coating that Pie Five calls Magic Dust.  How can you turn something like that down?  That little slice to the right was a snickerdoodle pizza cookie.  Again I’ve had better cookies, but it was still a cookie, which is always awesome.

So to recap this review.  Pie Five will have its moments.  They have a lot of interesting flavors from pizza carbonara to BBQ to buffalo chicken.  All the pizzas are freshly made and delivered to you quickly, and that is where these guys win.  Hit them up if you need a quick pizza fix.  If you are looking for amazing gourmet pizza, I would look elsewhere.
