When it comes to Mexican food, this place is an absolute diamond in a land of candy machine plastic finger gems. I’m really starting to get stingy when it comes to where I go for Mexican food. Basically, I don’t want my Mexican food to taste like IKEA furniture. Let me explain. IKEA furniture is all “do it yourself” there isn’t a ton of design that goes into it. It is straight forward and cheaply priced. With Mexican food, I don’t want to go to a place where it feels like people threw a bunch of parts together and called it an entrée. I don’t want to feel like what I am eating, I could “do it myself” in 10 minutes with stuff I bought from Wal-Mart. Tarahumara might be a 40 minute trek for those that live down in the Salt Lake Valley, but if you want a premium Mexican experience, with perhaps the best salsa bar North of Chihuahua (where the Tarahumara people come from), then this is your place.
We got to Tarahumara, and it was packed. Even as we were driving up to it, I felt like I was converging along with a dozen other vehicles to the best spot in town. Luckily they have plenty of seating. If you want seat service and are 21 and over, you can eat inside the Cantina, where there happened to be live music Saturday night. If you just want to order and have your food brought to you, then there is a large seating area in the back, and of course, you will be right next to the salsa bar.
The mini strip mall where Tarahumara was located also had a panaderia or bakery in it, so there were tons of Mexican baked goods to take home with us. You better believe I grabbed some tres leches to take with us. There may have been a creme stuffed cookie that happened to make its way into my pocket as well.
The food was excellent. With so many salsa choices, you can create hundreds of different flavor choices! These particular tacos had very tender pork. Even the rice and beans, while they look quite ordinary, were very well prepared and flavorful. Here were some other dishes we tried:
If you were to ask Tarahumara to recommend something, they would probably tell you about their fajita plates. I didn’t order one, but can tell you from walking by some tables that did order them, that the fajitas look spectacular.
Well that about sums it up here. Really good Mexican food. Exceptional salsa bar. Great atmosphere. Check them out in Midway!
