European Pizza Deli

European Pizza Deli

European Pizza Deli is one of those hidden places that is truly hidden.  This part of town somewhere between South Salt Lake and West Valley isn’t exactly known as the culinary mecca of Salt Lake City.  I certainly don’t drag Redwood Rd. between 2100 South and 3500 South looking for a quick bite to eat.  Options are scarce.  This place, while slightly suspicious on the outside, actually has some decent points to it, that may make it worth a visit.

Additionally I have to dispel what this is, and what this is not.  First what this is not.  This is not a Granatos/Caputos style deli with imported meats and cheeses.  Also this is not a traditional “pizza” place with lots of pizza options.  I suppose I wasn’t fair to EPD when I visited because I didn’t even order a pizza when I went there.  I don’t even recall if pizza was prominently featured on the menu.  EPD has more of a Greek diner (the place is actually owned by a Bosnian family) vibe to me which is why I ordered what I ordered pictured below.

Gyro Sandwich

I went with a gyro sandwich, which was actually quite good.  It doesn’t come on a traditional pita like other gyros do.  It came on a delicious round bread baked fresh on location.  The gyro meat was well cooked and everything tasted great.  My kids got some chicken kabobs with some rice pilaf and that was good as well.  I don’t know if the food was enough to get me hot and bothered to go out of my way and wander into this part of town when I have a hankering for a gyro, but just know that if you do happen to be driving on this part of Redwood, there is an oasis available in this food desert.
