Empanada Express

Empanada Express

I recently spent a week in Argentina in Cordoba and Buenos Aires, which is the land of the empanada, so I’m going to do my absolute best to not let that trip taint my review of Empanada Express.  I mean, the three top things I learned about Argentina were bife de chorizo, alfajores, and empanadas.  On our last night there we went to a local parilla and had an amazing meal.  The empanadas were huge and were only $0.50 cents each.  I almost felt guilty buying them.  With that said, we all can’t just get on a plane and take the 10 hour trip down to the deep South, so there has to be a local place to scratch that empanada itch.  Found it in Murray!

I appreciated the simplicity of the Empanada Express Menu.  They offer 10 different empanada types running at $4 each.  You can choose most flavors to be either baked or fried.  I actually ordered both of my empanadas fried, but talking to the owner after my meal, the baked ones may be even better.

Empanada Meal with rice, beans, plantain, and salad

I was impressed with the side dished that come with the empanada meal.  The black beans were done really, really well, and I loved the sprinkle cheese that came on top.  The rice was on point, as were the plantains.  The cucumber / tomato salad was surprisingly tasty.  I don’t know what surprised me more, the fact I ate my veggies or the fact I enjoyed them so much.  In a fast food world where most “meals” come with sides such as french fries, potato chips, or lard laden biscuits, the sides here are a nice change of pace.

Argentina Empanada

My first empanada was the Argentina version.  It came with pulled chicken breast, which interestingly enough of all the empanadas I tried in Argentina, none of them had chicken.  Nevertheless, these were delicious.  I was initially concerned with the $4 per empanada price tag, but I assure you at $10 for an empanada meal, you will get plenty to eat.  These empanadas are very well filled, and not 50% air like other empanadas I have tried.

Venezuela Empanada

I give the slight edge to this Venezuela empanada.  It has flank steak beef with onion, and plantain banana inside.  Empanada Express provided me with two different salsa choices to go along with my meal, a mango salsa, and also a guacamole salsa.  Both were delicious.

Empanada Express was good enough and close enough to my work to warrant a follow-up visit.  I’m really interested to try the baked empanadas as well as some of the other flavors like the Jamaican empanada.  These guys are located over by the WalMart in the Union Park / Ft. Union area.  You can check out their website here.
