The Garden Restaurant

The Garden Restaurant

SLC Food Radar has always focused on local restaurants, especially those that are uniquely Utah in ambiance and flavor.  The Garden Restaurant on the 10th floor of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building fits both of those requirements.

Temple Square

Temple Square

Doesn’t matter if you are LDS or not, or from Utah or just visiting, the views from The Garden restaurant are awesome.  I would recommend dinner around Christmas time because Temple Square decorates the grounds with lights.

New to The Garden this month are your array of flavored hot chocolate and sodas like the Sunset Fizz pictured above, a cranberry juice, orange juice, and club soda concoction that was delish.

Fried Pickle Spears

Fried Pickle Spears

From the appetizer menu I would recommend not skipping out on the fried pickle spears.  I’ve seen fried pickles in other places before, but they were always chopped in thin slices and fried, not in spear form.  The Garden gets this one right.  The fried breaded coating was tasty, but the hot pickle along with the ranch or fry sauce was on point.

Corn Chowder

Another hit of the table was the corn chowder.  As a general rule of thumb, I’m really wary of generic chowder with oyster crackers in the middle.  Our waiter assured us though we would like it and he was right.

Tex Mex Barbecue Enchiladas

My colleague ordered the enchiladas, the name sounded amazing.  They were okay in his opinion, he was set back by the sweetness of the enchiladas, but really enjoyed the caramelized onions.

Braised Beef Tip

Braised Beef Tip

At a recent global food event in London I was asked what best described Utah cuisine.  It took me a second to think about it, but I think comfort food sits near the top of my list.  Very few things say comfort to me than beef along with some unique and tasty mac and cheese.  With that said, I really enjoyed my dish.  The beef had a rosemary onion demi-glaze around it, and the mac and cheese was rich and creamy.  A very solid dish!

Chocolate Cinnamon Cake

Chocolate Cinnamon Cake

Finally dessert time!  They had a special going on with some pumpkin flavored cheesecake of some sort, but let’s be honest.  Pumpkin flavored everything under the sun in the month of October and November is a little over done in my opinion.  We went instead with the chocolate cinnamon cake and were richly rewarded.  The cake was just awesome, as was the ice cream.

You can see the full menu online here.  It’s a nice menu, not overwhelming and long.  The Garden offers a lot of reasonably priced and delicious options.  Service was great, space was open and bright with great views.  A nice enough spot for a special occasion, but casual enough for a quick business lunch.
