Delicious Eating in London, England

Last month I had a chance to attend FoodieHub.tv‘s Global Food Awards in London, England.  It was an amazing experience to take my love of food to a global level.  I realize that most of my reviews have been in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the United States and South America.  London and Europe has been eating and cooking much longer.  In fact walking past Westminster Abbey that existed before America was even discovered really put things in perspective.  Here are a “few” pictures from my trip.

Dalston Street Foods

Dalston Street Foods

Day one had us at the Dalston Street Feast.  You can learn a lot from a city by its food trucks and street vendors.  It is a huge part of learning about the local scene.  Dalston had a cool hipster vibe to it.  There were tons of eclectic food vendors with some pretty delicious stuff.  Some of the best food I had in London I had at Dalston.

Bleecker St.

First stop at the Street Feast was Bleecker St. and the home of the Bleecker Black.  Sorry Salt Lake City, you can’t find a burger there that beats the Bleecker St Black.  Two patties with black pudding and cheddar cheese.  This burger practically melts in your mouth with waves of delicious beefy flavor in all its glory.  It eventually went on to take the FoodieHub.tv award for best burger in the world.  Black never tasted so good!

Gorditas

Gorditas

This my friends is how you decorate a food truck.  Taco trucks are a dime a dozen in some parts of the world.  How many gordita trucks are there however?  A taco or gordita has 3 main elements.  The tortilla or shell, the fillings, and the garnishment.  Starting out with a lightly fried gordita already introduces that additional element to the taco that puts it over the top.  I went with a chicken as well as a pork version and both were awesome.

I like when street vendors take a classic dish and at a twist or fusion element to it.  Just like the previous vendor took the taco to the next level, these guys had some wicked tasty naan tacos with delicious meat and garnished with some tasty sauce.  They cooked them up on huge cast iron skillets.

Finally if you held a gun to my head and made me choose a favorite of the night, it may have been the sliders and pork fries we had.

I promise those fries taste every bit as good as the picture looks.

When I think about eating this slider, I get down on my knees and pray.  the buns were steamed and then grilled in butter.  The patties were formed out of fresh ground beef, and the cheddar cheese and bacon.  Everything came together so perfectly.  I wish I had it in my mouth right now.

Toff's Fish

Toff’s Fish

On day 2 we went to one of the more iconic London fish and chips places around in Toff’s.  They won the 1988 best fish and chips awards in London.  Pretty prestigious huh?  I still remember the 1988 Topps baseball cards.  It was a damn good year to be alive.  They get the fish straight from the docks where they are washed and fied up in peanut oil along with chips. (don’t call them fries)  The result generated tears in my eyes.

Of course in between eating, we had to check out some of the sights of London.  We went to Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, and took a stroll past Big Ben Tower.

Day 3 we continued our tour of the London Burger scene.  This just in….  Burgers in London are good.

Patty and Bun

I felt like the paparazzi taking pictures of these burgers at Patty and Bun.  The burgers and chips with salt and rosemary were delicious, but what really surprised me was the unique taste of the wings.  I just may have enjoyed those a bit more.

To cap off the London trip was the FoodieHub Global event at St. John Bread and Wine.  It was a great night of food and entertainment when we celebrated the best dishes in the globe.  The winner of tastiest dish actually went to Louie Mueller BBQ just North of Austin, Texas.  Sorry Salt Lake, no representation this year.  🙂

My overall impressions of London was all love love love.  The people were friendly, the city was beautiful, and the food and scene were all awesome.  I hope to be able to go back soon and often.
