The Egg and I

My own personal mission to find the world’s best breakfast burrito is a critical one.  But such as life, it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey.  I won’t stop until I try them all, and even when I do, I still won’t stop.  I gave The Egg and I a try the last week for the first time.  They have several Utah locations, but I found this one located in Holaday which was a perfect and convenient location close to my office.

The Egg and I is similar to approach to The Original Pancake House in Sugarhouse, as well as Egg Harbor Cafe for those familiar with the Chicago-land based breakfast joint, in that it is not open for dinner.  The Egg and I is open for breakfast and lunch only.  I’m cool with that because breakfast is my favorite meal of the day.

Breakfast Burrito

Breakfast Burrito

There wasn’t a single element to this breakfast burrito that I found to be absolutely amazing, but there wasn’t anything that I found to be lacking either.  It was a solid, delicious breakfast burrito.  By first glance, when I opened my to-go carton, I wasn’t very impressed.  However, The Egg and I gives you 2 types of salsa for your breakfast, which was a big plus in my book.  I got the choice of breakfast potatoes or grits to go along side my burrito.  I also got a choice of protein on the inside of the burrito and went with sausage.  Not pictured on the inside of the burrito, was a very generous portion of scrambled eggs and sausage.  The burrito itself wasn’t particularly thick, but the inside was full of only the good stuff and not cheap fillers like beans and the like.  Paired with the salsa, everything tasted quite good.  The only thing I would change would be to provide an option to place it in a tinfoil wrap so that people stopping in looking for breakfast on the go, and easily partake of their food on their way to work.  The price was around $9 bucks for the entire carton, which I felt was slightly high, but not a deal breaker.

The food was good enough to warrant a second visit to sample their other wares.  I think I saw a huevos rancheros plate on the menu which is my all-time favorite breakfast dish.  Give em a try!
