Bambara

When asked to recommend a great place to stay in Salt Lake City, the Hotel Monaco is near the top of my list.  The location is great.  Located downtown across from the Capitol Theatre, and right near the light rail station, as well as a few blocks away from shopping at City Creek and sight-seeing at Temple Square, any traveler to SLC has loads of options within a mile radius.  The hotel itself is nice and affordable, but perhaps the biggest perk is Bambara restaurant located on the first floor.

Bambara restaurant and head chef Nathan Powers have blessed Salt Lake City with delicious fine dining for the past decade.  While I have dined here before, this was my first visit as a food blogger, thus with camera phone in hand, I took some business clients there for a delicious celebratory dinner.

Blue Cheese House Cut Potato Chips

At Bambara one of the house favorites and the perfect start to any dinner are the blue cheese house cut potato chips.  While a fan of blue cheese in general, because of its sharp and salty flavor, too much can be a turn over for my palette.  These chips managed to capture the taste of the blue cheese without overpowering.  I thought there were really well done and put together.

Crab Stuffed Piquillo Peppers

Our table also sampled some of the crab stuffed piquillo peppers covered in safron sauce.  These had a delicious, rich, and savory flavor to them.  Simply delicious!

Grilled Lamb Rack Chops

There was so much I loved about my dinner plate, I don’t know where to begin.  Starting from left the right, the greens were fried kale sprouts.  I’ve never tasted anything quite like them, and I won’t forget them anytime soon.  They had a crisp and salty flavor that was simply awesome.  Bambara also did a lot of clever things with celery.  That’s a celery root slaw on top of the lamb, and a celery puree on the bottom.  Both were perfect.  That lamb though!  WOW  Grilled up perfectly in some dijon bread crumbs.  This plate had so much flavor and texture, it was a culinary dream come true.

Seared Maine Scallops

My colleague sitting in front of me went with the scallops.  They were served with some pork belly brussel sprouts and on top a bed of salami saffron tomato cherry risotto.  Sounds great right?  He along with everyone else at our table spent the entire evening ranting and raving about the food here.

Bambara Steak Frites

To the left of me, my good friend and co-worker had planned to only eat half of his steak frites, and take the other half home to his wife.  I’m happy to report that his plate was completely clean by the end of the night.

Bambara is on the short list when it comes to downtown SLC fine dining and is easily among one of the best restaurants in town.
