Egg Harbor Cafe

Egg Harbor Cafe

I love restaurants where breakfast is the principal cuisine.  Some of my favorite dishes of all-time are breakfast dishes.  Thus Egg Harbor was my breakfast choice in Chicago during my 1-day layover.  There are 15 locations in the Chicago/Wisconsin area that you can find here.

Waiting for my table took about 20 minutes, which wasn’t bad at all.  It gave me time to look over the menu and get warm from the frigid Chicago weather.  For those familiar with The Original Pancake House, the decor, layout, and business model is very similar.  Egg Harbor isn’t opened for dinner, they close at 2 pm.

Chilaquiles

Chilaquiles

I love chilaquiles so I immediately ordered them when I saw them on the menu.  I would only give these a 2 our of 5.  My problem with this dish is the fact they appear to have used tortilla chips for the base of the dish.  A good chilaquiles dish starts with handmade tortilla chips that are fried in-house and then sautéed in green or red sauce.  These chips taste like they came out of a Tostitos bag.  The eggs and avocado were fresh and tasted good, I just couldn’t get past the tortilla chips.

Banana Bread French Toast

Banana Bread French Toast

My banana bread french toast I would rate just slightly higher, maybe a 3 out of 5.  I ordered it because it sounded just too fantastic to pass up.  I love banana bread and I love french toast, however this match didn’t really work for me.  I found the banana bread to be somewhat dry.

Blueberry Pancakes

Blueberry Pancakes

My favorite part of the meal was perhaps the simplest, the blueberry pancakes.  The pancakes were warm and fluffy, and the blueberry compote was a nice touch.  Yummy!

Breakfast Potatoes

Breakfast Potatoes

Finally as a side item, I went with the breakfast potatoes covered with bacon, green onion, cheese, and sour cream.  It was basically a deconstructed baked potato.  Anything with cheese and bacon is good, so this was good too.

So overall the presentation was very nice, but some of the flavors were off for me at Egg Harbor Cafe.  Maybe I just didn’t order the right things, but I’ve had better breakfast food with what I ordered.
