Why am I showing you a YouTube of the Transformers theme song?  Because one of the opening lines of the song is “more than meets the eye” which is exactly how I felt pulling up to this Upper East Side Miami Eatery.  All I saw was a neon sign on the outside of this restaurant connected to an old motel with a small parking lot.  Certainly not where I would expect to find a culinary masterpiece, let alone a place I would stop at cruising down Biscayne Blvd.  As I’m not from Miami and meeting a friend for dinner, I was wondering if I was lost somehow.  The news here is, not only was I not lost, but I found an absolute treasure.  Blue Collar is much more than meets the eye from the outside.  Do not make the mistake of judging this book by its cover.  It turned out to be one of the best dinners I’ve had in a long time.

Blue Collar doesn’t have the biggest dining area in the world.  I counted about 10 tables on the inside that sat between 2 and 4.  They also had a few tables in a patio area on the outside.  Didn’t matter though, as the menu and food did all the talking.  One very cool thing about Blue Collar are the veggies.  I’m not sure if in the 3 years of this food blog I’ve ever said that, but I’m saying it now.  The veggies here are not only creative, but they are delicious.  My friend ordered her plate just by choosing 4 of the veggies pictured above on the menu board.  They make things like beets with goat cheese, curry cauliflower puree, sautéed kale, and sweet potato plantain mash.  On the left hand side, they have their daily menu, which has a rotating selection of ribs, parmesan dish, and braised meats dish.

I saw the ultimate comfort dish and personal favorite mac and cheese on the menu and had to try it.  Not sure what they put in there besides parmesan cheese, cheddar cheese, trugole, and bacon but I don’t want to know because it was probably something illegal.  This mac and cheese was so good, even now a week later and typing about it is generating an emotional response just reflecting on its greatness.  I understand that this dish is probably meant to be shared, but next time I’m going to order a plate just for me.

This dinner plate was sinfully good.  I went with the daily braised selection which was a pork shoulder with melted fontina cheese on top.  That’s right FONTINA cheese, the expensive stuff at the grocery store which was made to be melted.  It was fantastic.  I loved the way the mashed potatoes were infused with gravy.  THIS … THIS ….. THIS, in the name of all things holy THIS plate.  So good!


Veggie Chalkboard Selection

My friend went with the asparagus with blue cheese, beets and goat cheese, sautéed kale, and caramelized brussel sprouts.  If this is healthy eating, then sign me right up.  I’m not ready to become a vegetarian quite yet, but these veggies were excellent!  You can check out a full selection of the menu here.

Finally to end the meal, I swear I was not planning on ordering dessert.  However, somehow the folks at Blue Collar did their homework on me.  They knew that there was no way I could turn down a well done bread pudding….

I’m going to have fond memories of Blue Collar for a long long time.  Food was out of bounds.  Service was top-notch.  The servers wore the tuxedo t-shirts, which I thought really tells the Blue Collar story just right.  Basically you get 5 star food in a laid back and relaxing atmosphere.  GO HERE!  Just do it.
