Tea Rose Diner

Tea Rose Diner on Urbanspoon

The address might be a little confusing for residents used to Salt Lake’s grid system.  65 E 5th Ave is around 4850-ish South.  Tea Rose Diner is just West of State Street in a little un-assuming diner in a residential area.  Let me tell you though, lovers of not just good Thai food, but food in general.  You have come to the right place.

I have to admit that in the back of my mind I had some second guessing going on as we pulled up to the building.  It was about 12:30 and I didn’t really see that many cars, and the building itself didn’t have a ton of windows for one to look into and gauge the level of customers.  Once we walked in though we found the place to be absolutely packed.

There was only 2 wait staff, and even though there were tons of people they managed to seat us quickly, take our order quickly, bring out our food quickly and keep our water topped off for the entire time.  Don’t worry about service here, you will be taken good care of!

Fried Pot-Stickers

Fried Pot-Stickers

Check out their full menu here.  We ordered a serving of the fried pot-stickers.  I thought they were spot-on, but the real story here is how delicious the dipping sauce was.  It was like soy sauce and honey had a late night hook up, and this was their love child.  I couldn’t tell if it was more honey or more soy, but it was a beautiful creation and just the perfect dipping sauce for the pot stickers.  I felt really sad when the pot stickers were gone because I still had some honey sauce left.  In hindsight I probably should have just stuck my finger in there and finished off the rest of it.  I digress though, give this appetizer a try, they were really good.

Massamun Curry

Massamun Curry

One of Thai food’s most recognized barometers is the Massamun Curry.  There were several things I really appreciated about t his dish.  First the vegetable cuts were just right.  I’ve had dish where the cuts were too chunky and it interrupted the eating experience.  The coconut milk broth was perfect too.  Tea Rose Diner gives you an ample amount of rice, and not just average rice, it was perfect rice.  I like pouring my curry over my rice, and both portions were perfect.  I was getting pretty full by the end of the meal, but it tasted so good, I had to just keep going.  You can choose between chicken, beef, and tofu I believe.  I went with the chicken and it was perfect.  Honestly this place just shot up the list of my favorite Thai places in Salt Lake City based on taste.

Pineapple Curry

Pineapple Curry

My friend went with the pineapple curry.  I didn’t try his and he didn’t try mine, so I can’t tell you about it.  He was in agreement though that his dish was delicious.

Everything about the lunch experience was good.  We were in, we were out.  The food was good, and so was the service.  I read a few comments on-line that Tea Rose Diner was a little expensive.  My plate of Massamun curry was $11 and that was without a soda, so I do get where folks are coming from.  There are other Thai places in town where you can get lunch specials in the $6 to $8 range.  However, I wouldn’t put those other places quite on par with Tea Rose Diner.  Some are close, but I would probably choose Tea Rose Diner if I had to make a choice.  A few bucks isn’t enough to sway me.
