It’s with great pleasure I write my first South Eastern Idaho review! I am from Idaho Falls originally, and to this day is one of my favorite places in the world. A lot has changed since I was a little kid. I’m not quite as familiar with the food scene as a lot of my relatives that live there still. I do however, have a few spots to share with you, and its my hope to add to this list over the next few years. So I’m going to start out with Smitty’s Pancake & Steak House!
Does it look cold up there in Idaho? You betcha! My first time at Smitty’s my dad told me a story of how when he was a little kid he came over to Smitty’s to de-thaw some pipes that they had. That may give you an idea of just how long Smitty’s has been in business. And of course you don’t stay open that long without serving up some great food.
I don’t know about the steaks or dinner options at Smitty’s but I now know from experience that the breakfast is top-notch. Smitty’s has a nice selection of pancakes and other breakfast items to choose from, including some European pancakes. The only other place I have seen a pancake selection like this was at the Original Pancake House in Salt Lake City. My dad ordered one of their German pancakes, and it was quite the site when they brought it out.
The German pancake was the “Andre the Giant” of all pancakes. Smitty’s puts some apples in the middle with a dollop of whipped cream on top. It tastes as good as it looks.
Smitty’s does their chicken fried steak just a tad different from the other guys. They fried up the steak and place it on top of the white gravy instead of underneath. This keeps the steak nice and crispy as you dip it in your gravy. It was a subtle nuance that I appreciated from this plate. The shredded hash browns were above average but not spectacular. Hash browns like this I have found to be very difficult to cook just right. The margin of error of them being too raw to being too crispy isn’t very big. The scrambled eggs were great. This plate worked just fine. I love getting a breakfast platter with multiple items on it. I have always been a fan of making bites with a little of everything; eggs, hash browns, gravy. Smitty’s makes a great breakfast plate.
I only post the picture above, not because I think it looks appetizing, but to point out that my wife likes to put ketchup on EVERYTHING! Rice, eggs, pizza, you name it. The interesting thing however, is that I love putting salsa on my eggs, which is also tomato based. Kinda funny how minor changes in how you prepare a vegetable can make all the difference. The pancakes here were spectacular. They give you several options to choose from in syrup. I loved each one of them.
Well I think that is it. Idaho Falls is now on the SLC Food Radar map. Stop on in for breakfast and have some pancakes!
