Hatch Family Chocolates has been open in The Avenues since 2003. You may have heard of the show The Little Chocolatiers on T.V. Well that is based on this store. The location changed about 2 years ago, and now they operate just a block from LDS Hospital. I’m going to take a quote from the Hatch Family Chocolate Website on their hot chocolate because in my opinion, that is their specialty.
“Our Hot Chocolate is not to be missed. There is no powder mix in our hot chocolate. Our secret recipe is steamed to perfection using a blend of solid chocolates. You can choose milk or dark chocolate. We even prepare this drink vegan. This rich, velvety, chocolate drink is fit for a king. People have come from all over the globe to experience our hot chocolate, which has been featured on many local news outlets. This is indeed the drink of the Gods.”
Drink of the Gods is an understatement. Forget everything you know about Hot Chocolate. We have been having quite a rough winter here in Salt Lake City, so this stuff is just perfect. I like chocolate. I’m not crazy about it though. I don’t eat chocolate everyday like some. Everyone knows the movie “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” In that movie, Willa Wonka has a chocolate factory that supposedly makes mind-blowing chocolate. Growing up as a kid, I always dreamed that the chocolate river inside the factory was some sort of fantasy chocolate that doesn’t exist anywhere on earth. I’ve had tons of hot chocolate through the years, but I’ve never had anything that I thought was good enough to be Willa Wonka Chocolate River good. Until now. This hot chocolate is on that level.
I stopped up to get some hot chocolate, but couldn’t help but getting a few others treats as well. Everything here is delightful. They even have a nice big section of homemade ice cream. Lots of happiness in this little store.
I ended up going with a Karl Malone Krispie Bar along with my hot chocolate. Do you see that thick layer of caramel? They don’t cheat you on the caramel. This thing was fantastic!
I recommend giving these guys a try. I imagine with it being up in the Avenues, there may be a lot of U of U students familiar with this place. Perhaps there are some folks in the southern part of the valley that have not given it a try. Make it a point to try them out. The hot chocolate is a must. Don’t even think of going inside if you are not going to buy one. Of course leaving with “just” a hot chocolate is an entirely different challenge, but a fun one!
