Continuing on with my St. George countdown from my recent trip, I offer you a local favorite Honolulu Grill. When doing my homework, I didn’t find this through any of my normal research means. This one was recommended to me purely from word of mouth. Every time I asked someone about this place, they said they loved it, and I should try it. Sold! I went to Honolulu Grill and discovered a great little Hawaiian place that serves grilled meats with rice and noodles.
One of the first things I loved about this place was the music they had playing. You know that scene at the end of “50 First Dates” with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, where they have the song “Over the Rainbow” playing with the ukulele? That is the type of music they had playing. The music that makes you feel you are lying under a coconut tree on some beach in Hawaii. I loved it.
To order, I told the lady I really liked meat, especially chicken and pork, as well as rice and noodles. She recommended the chicken and kalua pork combo plate. She asked me if I wanted some teriyaki sauce over my rice? Really? Some questions shouldn’t have to be asked. Of course!
You know that moment in cartoons where the waiter comes out with a plate covered with a silver domed lid? Then when they take it off sometimes there is food inside, or other times it is a surprise or a small furry animal? That is the anticipation I felt when they brought out the classic white 3 compartment foam tray. Toby Keith should follow-up with his “Red Solo Cup” song and make a “White 3 compartment tray” song. Well I opened the tray and pictured above is what I got, so luckily no furry animals, only steaming hot teriyaki meats, rice drenched in teriyaki sauce, and yummy pasta salad.
The White One Compartment Foam tray is a relative of the Three Compartment tray. As you can see. WOCFT (white one compartment foam tray) can also deliver tasty morsels of Hawaiian heaven. This one above is grilled steak, rice, and pasta salad.
This place was good, but I knew it would be going in. I know some places you can trick yourself into liking beforehand, sort of like a self-fulfilling prophesy. I was weary of that the entire time, but when you are listening to great music, and eating great tasting meats. I kept having to look over my shoulder to make sure I was in St. George and not in Hawaii. This place really was fantastic.
