You can often tell how good the food is in a restaurant by how busy it seems during lunchtime.  I really enjoy finding the “hole in the wall” or “hidden diner” that although tucked away in a remote neighborhood has awesome food.  If you see a lot of cars lined up outside around the lunch hour then its probably a safe bet that the food is pretty good inside.  Thus is the case for my inaugural foodar review post at Moochies off of 800 South and 250 East.

Moochies wasn’t always the cult lunchtime spot in Salt Lake City, located just a few blocks West of Liberty Park.  It used to be just a small pottery shop called Circle Pottery.  I remember a friend and I were having some Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches over at East Coast Subs on State Street and while reading through a copy of City Weekly, we noticed a small advertisement for Moochies Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches located in the back of a pottery shop.   Being fans of the Philly Cheesesteak we were intrigued to go try this new place out.  A few days later I drove by and found the place, although you would never know there was a restaurant there, I went in not knowing what to expect.

Walking in for the first time, the walls were lined with pottery creations with small price tags as well as classic garage tin signs for sale.  I walked up to the counter in the back of the store and ordered my first Moochies cheesesteak sandwich, and thus history was made.  The lady asked if I would like mushrooms on my sandwich, which my reply was of course “yes”.  She then explained that the original cheesesteak sandwiches over in Philly made their sandwiches with Cheese Whiz American cheese, and she asked if I would like to get mine with provolone.  I opted for the provolone cheese.  Sometimes I think back on that day.  What if I would of gotten my sandwich without the mushrooms or without provolone cheese?  Although still awesome tasting, would it of been the same life changing event that transpired that day?  No my sandwich was a masterpiece, but it would only get better.  I was also introduced to Moochies famous jalapeno sauce.

Jalapeno Sauce deserves it’s own paragraph, tome, volume, discussion, thesis… all by itself.  I’m not even sure what it is really made off, other than I’m pretty sure there are ground up jalapeno bits inside.  Scholars have researched for years its contents and all the major universities and institutions in the world still don’t fully agree what is in the sauce.  Maybe fairy dust, maybe some reminent of a highly addictive drug, or perhaps gypsy tears.  This stuff is AWESOME!!!  They handed me my own bottle of Jalapeno Sauce and I walked over to my table with Jalapeno Sauce, 12 inch Philly Cheesesteak sandwich, and a batch of fresh garlic cheese bread and marinara sauce.

As I begin to eat, a small tear came to my eye.  Not because the jalapeno sauce was spicy hot (it wasn’t) but because the food was so good I though I had been trasported to Philadephia heaven.  I asked myself “I can’t believe this is happening to me”.  The japalpeno sauce was so good.  The bread was so fresh and crunchy on the outside, but chewy on the inside.  I made sure that as I took every carefully selected bite, that each morsel was properly garnished with jalapeno sauce as to achieve the proper meat to sauce ratio in my mouth.  I wasn’t going to let a single bite go to waste, or enter my mouth unprepared.  Now these sandwiches are a foot of carnivore bliss and even though I was getting so full and my belly was despertly begging my mouth to stop, I just had to continue on it was so good.  The meat was tender and juicy. The cheese intertwined with the meat, and with mushrooms and sauce.  Every bite was better and better.

The garlic bread side didn’t play second-fiddle either.  You have two slices of toasted sandwich bread, with a handful of shredded cheese inside, that was naturally melting inside the warm epicenter of the package.  You read that right.  They don’t melt the cheese on for you, they let the natural heat melt the cheese.  What resulted was cheesy, garlicy, toasty, delicousy, heavnly, yum-yum-ness that is beyound description.  I somehow managed to fit all this food into my stomach.  I leaned back in my chair and let out a nice solid burp that really was a nice cap to my meal.  or so I thought.

I got up from my chair and went over to look in the display case and noticed there were some packages of “Tasty Cakes” that were imported from Philadelphia.  I asked the lady behind the counter to tell me about the “Tasty Cakes”.  She just looked at me and asked me in a sweet angelic voice.  “Do you want some Tasty Cakes”.  Uhhhhh.  Duh?  You mean to tell me there is something called a  “Tasty Cake” and I’m not going to try it.  I again whipped out my debit card and ordered me some tasty cakes to take with me on my trip back to the office.

What an experience my first visit was those years ago.  Now Moochie’s is a Salt Lake City icon stop for anyone looking for a religious experience for lunch.  They have expanded their building, added outdoor seating, even added Pennsylvania Dutch Birch Beer on tap, and yes, the jalapeno sauce is still pentifull and ready.

Now to those Moochie rookies, just listen to FoodRadar and do me a favor.  Don’t try to be cute on your first visit.  Just get the Philadelphia Cheesesteak sandwich with provolone cheese.  Add mushrooms and fresh peppers if you would like, but I don’t want you coming to my favorite sandwich shop without doing it right and making it tight on your first visit.  Once you have the “bread and butter’ you have my blessing to try their other offerings like their meatball sub, and other sandwiches.  They also have an ever changing daily special with a new delight always on the menu.  Make your meal a “Moochies Meal” and you can add a side salad, french fries, and drink to go with your sandwich.

I invite you to try Moochie’s if you have not.  If it has been a while since you have been, I invite you to try it again.  You really need to add this to your lunchtime rotation.  I always have Moochies in mind when thinking of where I want to eat lunch.  It’s good to have an “ace” in your pocket when it comes to lunch.  There really can’t be any shame in your game.  Go to Moochies.  You won’t regret it, send me a message if you need a guide for your first visit.  I always make time and room for Moochies.

    Excellent first review! Moochies is one of my all time fav’s, I go as often as I can. I’m more of a “Philly straight” kind of guy, I like it with just cheese whiz and meat, drenched in the Jumping Jalapeno sauce of course. But I do agree that you have to try the Philly before anything else they have, although, I don’t think they have anything that is not good.
